On top of the Spanish Steps in Rome
Here we are at the start of our Italian holiday. Still jetlagged we managed to get around Rome with the skill of veteran travelers! It was a great start to a brilliant trip.
Kissing in Monterosso
Of course, we left our mark as tourists. Generally we like to travel inconspicuously but sometimes one of us deserves a kiss. I was the lucky one this time, and managed to capture it on film.
Monterosso passegata
Yet another self portrait, here C and I are strolling around Monterosso after dinner. We ate per the custom in Italy, which means generally after 8 and for at least an hour and a half - it was glorious, but that's what vacations are for.
WOW what an eternal monument
Our apartment was not more than 100 steps from the Pantheon. Early on we agreed that the Pantheon would make a great home base and we weren't disappointed. It's central to everything, and we enjoyed the walks as we toured every corner and cranny.
The Pantheon at night
We started every day with breakfast in its shadow, and walked around its ancient walls every night. I don't think we could get enough of the Pantheon. She has an energy all her own.
Venice as the sun sets - the Grand Canal
From Rome we traveled to Venice and spent three nights wandering about its canals. I got us lost on the first night, so we got that over with. The other days went by without a hitch. This picture is of the Academia museum and was taken at the gondola station outside of St Mark's Square.
The beach on Lido
Still in Venice, C and I did some exploring of the outer banks and canals. This is us on the beach in Lido, the eastern most landmass in Venice. We were there early enough that the whole beach belonged to us, but we shared it with the older couples strolling on the water's edge.
Posing on top of the dome in Florence
Carolyn and I enjoy the view and breeze on top of the dome in Florence. It's a marvelous work of art in a city that bred many among the best in the world.
Crossing the Arno, and we get a little gift of light
We were out wandering in Florence and were crossing the Arno river and I caught the light just right. It was a warm afternoon and we were on our way to find a nice dinner. We made a great choice with the White Boar - I think we both agree that it's the best restaurant in Florence.
Our beach at Monterosso
Our travels then brought us to the Cinque Terra, a beautiful and pristine region in the Italian riviera. This picture was taken looking back on the southern part of Monterosso, the northern most town on the 5 and our home base.
Vernazza
There was an abundance of fine food and great views throughout the Cinque Terra but this was one of our favorites. This picture is of Vernaza, just south of Monterosso, and taken from the hiking trail that connects the two.
